Stop Winging It.
Get your money sorted in a weekend. No jargon. No shame. No lectures about avocado toast — just the full picture of your money, and exactly what to do with it.
You’re not bad with money. You’re winging it.
Nobody ever sat you down and showed you the whole picture at once. Your employer tells you a salary. Your bank shows you a balance. Your pension sends one letter a year with a number that feels made up. None of it talks to each other — so you look at what’s left at the end of the month and call it a plan.
If any of these land, this is for you:
- You know your salary but not what actually hits your account, or why there’s a gap.
- You couldn’t tell someone your monthly outgoings to the nearest hundred pounds.
- You pay into a pension and have no idea what it might be worth.
- You’ve never worked out your net worth as a single number.
- You want to save for something big but don’t know what you can actually afford.
What’s inside
Pay, budget, net worth
Your real take-home pay (and why salary sacrifice is a free upgrade), a budget that survives real life, and the one number that doesn’t lie.
Debt & protection
The order to tackle debt in, and the boring insurance and emergency-fund basics that save you when life goes sideways.
Pensions, ISAs, big goals
The pension as the tool you’re wasting, investing without the hype, and planning for a house deposit, a wedding, a baby or a career break.
The allowances most people miss
The £100k 60% trap, the Child Benefit charge, Marriage Allowance, Tax-Free Childcare and the rest of the free money left on the table.
Your 90-day reset
A step-by-step plan from winging it to in control, a one-page cheat sheet, and three worked examples — three people, three plans.
2026/27 tax tables & tools
Every UK rate, band and allowance for 2026/27 (including Scotland), the best free tools, and the shifts to plan for over the next decade.
A taste: what you actually take home
From Chapter 1. Three salaries, each paying 5% into a pension by salary sacrifice, 2026/27 rates, England/Wales/NI, no student loan:
| Gross salary | £45,000 | £65,000 | £90,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income tax | −£6,036 | −£12,132 | −£21,632 |
| National Insurance | −£2,414 | −£3,246 | −£3,721 |
| Cash take-home / month | £2,858 | £3,864 | £5,012 |
| Cash per £1 earned | 76p | 71p | 67p |
Which is why a £5,000 pay rise at the higher rate puts about £2,900 in your account — and why, above £100,000, it can be worth far less. Chapter 9 shows you how to keep more of it.
Who wrote it
Written by Nick Walsh, founder of No More Winging It — the UK personal finance app that turns a photo of your payslip and bank statements into a full picture of your money. The playbook is the same framework the app is built on, in a form you can read in an afternoon.
Questions
What format is it?
A 44-page PDF. It works on your phone, tablet, laptop or printed out. You get the download straight after checkout, and a copy of the link by email.
Who is it for?
UK earners, employed or self-employed, roughly 25 to 55, who feel they should have a better grip on their money than they do. You don’t need to be in trouble — plenty of people earning very good money are winging it too.
Is it up to date?
Yes — it’s the 2026/27 UK edition, updated for this tax year. England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates are used throughout, with Scottish income tax bands in the appendix.
Is there a spreadsheet?
Yes — the No More Winging It Financial Planner is available as an optional £3 add-on on the next page, before you pay. You get it for both Excel and Google Sheets.
Does the planner work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Alongside the Excel file, you get a short PDF with a link to the Google Sheets version. Click it, choose “Make a copy”, and your own private copy is saved to your Google Drive — nobody else can see it, including us. You need a free Google account, and it works in a browser or the Google Sheets app. Prefer Excel? Just open the .xlsx — same planner, nothing to set up.
Is this financial advice?
No. It’s a practical framework for understanding your own money. It doesn’t account for your personal circumstances. For decisions about pensions, investments, insurance, tax or debt, speak to an FCA-authorised adviser.
